Abstract:
The problems in this study are the use of expressions in conveying politeness strategies in complaining and the low pragmatic competence in conveying politeness strategies to students in the sixth semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. The purpose of this study is to identify the politeness strategies in complaining used and what strategies are most often used by students. Researchers used the theory of Brown & Levinson (1987). This research uses descriptive quantitative method. The population in this study is the 6th semester students of the 2021/2022 academic year, totaling 60 people. In this study, researchers used a total sampling technique. In data collection, the instrument used is the Discourse Completion Test (DCT). Researchers use DCT through google form. Before deploying the DCT, the researcher validated the instrument through three experts. In analyzing the data, the researcher used descriptive analysis. The results of this study indicate that students use all politeness strategies in complaining. Consists of four strategies, namely: Bald on Record (BOR) strategy with a percentage of 42.08%, Positive Politeness (PP) strategy with a percentage of 11.88%, Negative Politeness (NP) strategy with a percentage of 27.29%, and Off Record (OR) strategy with a percentage of 2.92%. The most frequently used politeness strategies in complaining are Bald on Record (BOR) with a percentage of 42.08%.
